American born chinese

From the reading in class for the week of October 1st, American Born Chinese, I couldn't understand the relation between the old Chinese parable the mother told the son in the very beginning of the story. From what I mean when I say I didn't understand it, is how it relates to the main character's, Jin Wang, situation in the new school. As we get into the middle of the story, we learn than Jin Wang's presence in the new school isn't a welcoming one. It made me remember a time when I transitioned into a different school from everyone else in my neighbor hood. I was never really picked on because of my race, but I was because of my size. I was never the type to allow the bullies to get to me like they did to Jin. I wonder what made him to stay so humble upon all their racist slurs.
